Nikon Indy 300 Event Director David Bennett will be joined by the reigning Bartercard Miss Indy Kate Hockly in celebration of the first steps of construction for the 2008 Nikon Indy 300 being completed this week.
Over the coming two months leading into the October 23-26 event, nine =ridges will be erected, 2515 concrete barriers installed, 11,500 grandstand seats, 140 corporate suites furnished, 10km of debris fencing and 16km of security fencing placed, many more temporary structures fitted, and large-scale power and telecommunications systems activated.

Bennett and Hockly will be available to talk about the construction pl=ns from the base of the newly completed pedestrian bridge over the Gold Coast Highway, at the northern end of the circuit near Tedder Avenue ˜ the first of nine bridges to be created for this year's event.
NIKON INDY 300 CONSTRUCTION FACTS: - Construction of the Gold Coast street circuit generally begins in mi=-August with the positioning of the first pedestrian bridge at the northern end of the circuit and preliminary work for Pit Buildings on Macintosh Island. - The circuit is constructed of 2515 concrete barriers which all weigh=four tonnes each. They are moved to the circuit on the back of semi-trailers six barriers at a time and then positioned by construction staff. - The 4.47km circuit uses 10km of heavy-duty debris fencing, 16km of=security fencing, and nine temporary bridges. Approximately 100km of cabling is required and 6000 man hours of electrical reticulation. - Approximately 11,500 grandstand seats are constructed around the cir=uit. - There are nine temporary bridges providing access for patrons into t=e circuit and over the track. - In 1996, the Event initiated the installation of extra height debris=fence panels to high impact areas around the circuit, which has continued each year. In 2002, an additional 278 panels were fabricated and installed throughout the circuit, with a further 814 panels being fabricated for the 2005 and 2006 events. - In total there are approximately 420 temporary structures used for t=e Event. There are more than 140 corporate hospitality suites, more than 100 hard-wall portable buildings used for team and administration needs, and approximately 190 temporary buildings used for facilities including the event Media Centre, Medical facilities, Merchandise Sales and Emergency Services. - During the construction process, two traffic lanes remain open on th= Gold Coast Highway at all times with the speed limit on the Gold Coast Highway southbound reduced from 70km/h to 50km/h. At some periods this is again reduced to 40km/h in specific zones which are sign posted.
