The history behind the Company

Albert Octavious Dutton began a coachwork-building business in 1911, specialising in creating bodies for exotic vehicles such as Rolls Royce, lsotta, Franchini and more. His son Albert, an architect and engineer designed over 50 homes in Kew and Toorak, Victoria and also built numerous timber motor cruisers in the workshop at the Burnley family business. He further developed the Dutton motoring business providing service and repairs for Ferrari, Porsche and other luxury Marques.

In 1953 Dutton's became the first Porsche factory-appointed repair workshop in Australia. Jeff Dutton, Albert Junior's son, was apprenticed in the mechanical workshop of the business and his appreciation of unique cars soon became evident. Jeff quickly moved into sales of luxury automobiles and with his expertise and enthusiasm developed a reputation for quality and 'collectable world-market' vehicles.

The Dutton showroom moved to Church Street, Richmond in 1989 and soon became stocked with rare and collectable automobiles and Automobilia. The Dutton Sporting Car business became a luxury car marketplace and a rich arena for profitable investments.

To further promote the Dutton car showroom throughout Australia and the world, Dutton's sponsored the Australian Grand Prix Dutton Rally for a decade. In 2007 the Dutton showroom moved to the new Fender Katsalidis designed building in South Yarra.

Jeff's son James is now the fourth generation Dutton to share his family's passion and knowledge of special motor vehicles. James competed in many Dutton rallies and later successfully completed a series of the Porsche Carrera Cup, further spreading the Dutton name throughout the country.

In 2004, James started duttondirect.com, an online business to reflect an appreciation of the value of elite and exclusive products with which the Dutton name is synonymous.
